Ettumanoor Municipality is a historically significant urban local body located in Kottayam District. Renowned for its ancient Shiva temple, the town has long been recognized as a center of religious harmony, cultural heritage, and democratic values.

Origin of the Name

The name Ettumanoor is believed to have originated from the Malayalam words “Maan” (deer) and “Oor” (place), meaning “the land of deer.” Another popular interpretation traces the name to “Ettu Mana Oor”, referring to a settlement formed by eight Brahmin households (manas).

Historical and Religious Significance

The town's most important historical landmark is the Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple, one of the revered 108 Shiva temples of Kerala. According to local tradition, the Shiva Lingam was consecrated either by the demon Khara or by the sage Kharaprakashan. The temple shares a strong historical and spiritual connection with the famous temples at Vaikom Mahadeva Temple and Kaduthuruthy Mahadeva Temple.

The temple is also renowned for its exquisite Kerala mural paintings, particularly the celebrated image of Lord Nataraja, which is considered one of the finest examples of traditional mural art in the state.

Formation of the Municipality

As part of Kerala’s urban development initiatives, Ettumanoor was officially elevated to the status of a municipality prior to the 2015 Local Self-Government elections. This transformation enabled more efficient civic administration and accelerated infrastructure development to meet the growing needs of the population.

Governance and Development

Today, Ettumanoor Municipality provides a wide range of citizen-centric services through the K-SMART digital governance platform. These services include:

  • Birth and death registration
  • Building permit approvals
  • Property tax management
  • Online civic services and grievance redressal

The municipality also actively promotes women’s empowerment through the Kudumbashree Community Development Society (CDS), which plays a vital role in social development and community participation.

Ettumanoor Today

According to the 2011 Census, Ettumanoor recorded high literacy levels and a dense population base. Over the years, the town has emerged as a prominent commercial, educational, and cultural hub in central Kerala. By 2026, it continues to experience steady growth while preserving its rich historical and spiritual heritage.
